Good news for students preparing for NEET UG. The central government is preparing to increase 75 thousand new medical seats in the next five years. They will not have to go abroad to study medicine.
The central government is preparing to increase 75 thousand new medical seats in the next five years. A blueprint of a plan is being prepared for this. At present, there are 1,12,117 MBBS seats in the country. Despite this, many students are going to former Soviet countries, China, Bangladesh, etc. to study medicine. According to an estimate, at present about 30-35 thousand students are studying medicine in these countries.
The government has set a target of creating 75 thousand new seats in the next five years. The effort is to bring the number of seats to around two lakh annually. Under the scheme, medical colleges with good infrastructure will be given opportunities to increase seats. These include the establishment of new medical colleges, upgrading district hospitals to make medical colleges, motivating big private hospitals to open medical colleges, etc.
There are currently 731 medical colleges in the country. In 2014, their number was 387.
Let us tell you that every year in India, about 25 lakh students appear for the medical entrance exam NEET UG, out of which about 13 lakh can pass. But for these 13 lakh students who qualify for NEET, there are only about 1.12 lakh MBBS seats in the country. This situation is seen every year. Only those who get good ranks among NEET pass students can get affordable MBBS seats in government medical colleges. Due to very few MBBS seats in the country and the huge fees of private medical colleges, thousands of students dreaming of becoming doctors choose the option of doing MBBS from abroad (Russia, Ukraine, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan Philippines, etc.).
Many are getting MBBS seats in private medical colleges in the country but due to the hefty fees, they have to go to countries like Bangladesh, Ukraine, and Russia. These are the countries where the cost of MBBS is much cheaper than the private medical colleges of India. It is possible to get admission in these countries with fewer NEET marks as compared to India. However, it is mandatory to pass NEET to pursue MBBS from abroad. An eligibility certificate from the National Medical Commission (NMC) is also required. If the student does not do this then he will not be able to appear in the FMGE exam. Students who have done MBBS from abroad have to appear in the FMGE exam to get a license to practice as a doctor in India.
