Important Rules for MBBS Abroad: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an advisory for students taking admission to MBBS (UG) medical courses in foreign universities or institutions. If any Indian student wishes to study medicine from abroad, he must read the guidelines of NMC.
Do not take admission to institutions that do not follow the standards:
The NMC notice emphasizes following the guidelines mentioned in the Foreign Medical Graduate License (FMGL) Regulations, 2021, and warns against enrolling in institutions that fail to meet these standards.
Keep this in mind before taking admission:
The NMC has reiterated that students wishing to pursue medical education abroad should check whether the FMGL regulations are being followed before applying for MBBS admission in any foreign institution.
If the rules are not followed, the student will not be able to practice medicine in India:
The consultation emphasizes that if the prescribed conditions, such as the duration of the course, medium of teaching, curriculum, or clinical training, are found to be non-compliant with the FMGL regulations, the student will not be able to obtain registration to practice medicine in India.
The official notice of NMC states, “Any change in the duration, medium of instruction, curriculum, clinical training or internship/clerkship may lead to ineligibility for granting registration in India. In case of ineligibility, the entire responsibility will be of the candidate only.”
These conditions must be fulfilled to practice in India:
The FMGL Regulations, 2021, lay down specific conditions that foreign medical graduates are required to fulfill to obtain permanent registration to practice allopathy in India. The key requirements include:
Course duration and training:
The course duration must be a minimum of 54 months and an additional 12 months of internship at the same foreign medical institution.
The total duration of the program including training should be within 10 years
Medium of Course:
The medical degree from abroad must be obtained in English.
Curriculum:
The curriculum and clinical training should be equivalent to the Indian MBBS program, covering specified subjects such as general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics etc.
Clinical Training and Internship:
Practical training in clinical subjects is mandatory during the program.
A 12-month supervised internship in India is also to be completed after applying to the Commission.
Licensing and Recognition:
The medical degree will be recognized by the regulatory body of the foreign country concerned.
The graduate must be allowed to practice medicine in that country on par with its citizens.
